Cosmo·poli·tan

As in "citizen of the world"

Listening to a recent lecture by professor Michael Sugrue, I was struck by the word cosmopolitan.

He explained its Greek roots ('cosmos' as in universe and 'polis' as in city), suggesting that it meant someone who was at home anywhere, "belonging to all parts of the world, limited to no place or society" ... someone who was worldly in ideas and life.

How beautiful is that?
